Old School

If you live in East Jakarta, you'd probably know this restaurant. Well, more if you grew up in a Chinese family and your parents loves the old school Chinese eating places. This is Cahaya Timur. I've been coming here since I was little. The place looks empty all the time but they do deliveries and take-outs more. Tonight, I ordered my comfort food: Nasi goreng and a side of Lumpia Udang.

I always, always love a good salted fish Nasi Goreng. I don't enjoy the usual brown nasi goreng. I prefer the white one, and I love it if they can make it dry but still a little oily. I absolutely hate the mushy types. This is a good one. The price is 55k but I had to split it because it was too much for one.

The side dish is this Lumpia Udang. Always a love a good shrimp cake, with real shrimps, not just small ones. They offer a huge portion, crispy but soft in the inside. I love it! The price? Don't be surprised. It's 70k a portion.

Yes, it is pricey but good restaurants do use good quality ingredients and hence the high price tag. I will never stop coming here though. I feel like if you come to places like this you help preserve a piece of history.
